Tekfen Takes to the Basketball Court with Darüşşafaka
>

Tekfen Holding, a well-established Turkish firm of 62 years standing, has consistently provided support for education and the arts; now, by becoming the sponsor of Darüşşafaka's Basketball 'A' Team, Tekfen has extended its helping hand to the world of sport. The Darüşşafaka team, nicknamed 'Daçka', is to participate in the Tahincioğlu Basketball Super League and Turkish Airlines EuroLeague under the name 'Darüşşafaka Tekfen'.

Murat Gigin, Chairman of the Board at Tekfen Holding, said: "Two Turkish institutions, each of which has achieved world-class quality in its own field, have now combined to take their place side by side in the international arena. We at Tekfen are pleased and proud to be a party to this co-operation agreement."

For his part, Ümit Başkırt, President of Darüşşafaka Sports Club, said: "Our Eurocup championship has earned us the right to take part in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague - and now, thanks to Tekfen's help, this year's budget is going to be sufficient to meet all our club's needs. We have brought together a team that will bring to the basketball court a style of play that will give spectators a lot of pleasure."

Ahmet Çakı, Head Coach of the Darüşşafaka Tekfen team, said: "We want this partnership between Darüşşafaka and Tekfen to enable us to participate in top-class competitions both in Turkey and in Europe. Our aim is to ensure that the team's success can be continued into the future."

Tekfen Holding is one of the biggest and longest-established companies in Turkey, having been active in fields such as international contractorship, the agriculture business and real estate trading for the past 62 years. Now, the support Tekfen has traditionally given to education and the arts has been extended to the world of sport. The Darüşşafaka team, which is to represent Turkey in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague (Europe's foremost basketball league), will now take part in the Tahincioğlu Basketball Super League and Turkish Airlines EuroLeague under the name 'Darüşşafaka Tekfen', with Tekfen Holding as its main sponsor.

Speaking at the ceremony for the signing of the sponsorship agreement, Tekfen Holding Board Chairman Murat Gigin said it was a great honour to be the chief sponsor of the team that is to represent Turkey in this year's Turkish Airlines EuroLeague - the basketball 'A' team at Darüşşafaka, one of Turkey's most highly-respected institutions in sport as well as in education. He went on: "Two Turkish institutions, each of which has achieved world-class quality in its own field, will now take their place side by side in the international arena." Gigin drew attention to the fact that this was the first time in Tekfen's history that the company had signed a co-operation agreement with a sports club; he went on to state that Tekfen saw the sponsorship agreement as bringing with it a good deal of social responsibility. "These two institutions, each of which possesses a strong corporate character, a social conscience and a firmly-rooted awareness of human values, have grown and developed over the years without compromising their principles; now the two have combined in pursuit of a common goal. It is these shared values that provide the basis for our support for Darüşşafaka," he said.

Gigin went on to say that Tekfen's basic philosophy (summed up in the catchphrase 'Do the job you best know how to do, in the best possible way') would now be the guiding principle for everyone at Darüşşafaka Tekfen - both the players themselves and the technical support team. "Darüşşafaka Tekfen does not belong exclusively to its supporters," he said. "It is a sporting institution that enshrines values everyone in Turkey should endorse. For my part, I encourage all who love sport, both in Turkey and in Europe, to give their backing to the 'Black Panthers'."

"A team that will give spectators a lot of pleasure"

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Darüşşafaka Sports Club President Ümit Başkırt thanked Tekfen Holding for the support they are giving to the Darüşşafaka team, which has earned the right to take part in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague following its victory in the Eurocup for the 2017-18 season. "Thanks to Tekfen's help, our team's budget for this year is going to be sufficient to meet all its needs," he said. "We have brought together a team that will bring to the basketball court a style of play that will give spectators a lot of pleasure. Our goal is, first and foremost, to play good basketball, and in consequence to make it to the first eight in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague."

New Courts and a New Departure - the 'Darüşşafaka Basketball Academy'!

Başkırt went on to say he believed that the popular Tekfen brand-name would help the Darüşşafaka team to fulfil people's expectations. "For over a century, our club has had many successes at both the national and the international level, especially in basketball and volleyball. We have drawn our strength from all those who have lent their support to the Darüşşafaka brand-name and its mission - from the various highly-regarded Darüşşafaka member institutions, from the sports-loving public, and of course from the graduates of the Darüşşafaka School," he said.

"The founders of Tekfen Holding were guided by the belief that their aim should be to create social benefits as well as economic ones. Our budget plans are drawn up with the aim of maximising our team's success; thanks to the sponsorship agreement we are signing today, Tekfen Holding will be opening up new resources for our club, and these resources will allow us to build new training courts in addition to the present Darüşşafaka court."

Sports Club President Ümit Başkırt then made the following announcement: "In the near future, we will be opening a 'Darüşşafaka Basketball Academy' in co-operation with one of Turkey's leading universities.

"Together, these two investments will permit us to continue to fulfil our mission - that of becoming a club that not only plays basketball at the highest level, but also provides an education of excellent academic standard and supplies Turkish basketball with new players."

Ahmet Çakı, Darüşşafaka Tekfen's Head Coach, said in his speech that a good team had been put together thanks to Tekfen Holding's assistance as chief sponsor. "Our goal is firstly to maintain Darüşşafaka Tekfen's good name, and secondly to play such good basketball and show such a strong team spirit that we are able to represent the club in the best possible way in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and the Tahincioğlu Basketball Super League," he said. "We see this co-operation as only the beginning," he went on. "It is our intention to add value to all the players in our team (both Turkish and foreign), to ensure that the team created by this partnership between Darüşşafaka and Tekfen takes its rightful place among the foremost clubs in Turkey and in Europe, and to carry our team's success into the future in a sustainable way."

Taking part in the signing ceremony, Talha Çamaş, Chairman of the Board at the Darüşşafaka Society, said: "The Tekfen Group is one of Turkey's longest-established institutions, and for many years it has supported the Darüşşafaka Society - which this year is celebrating its 155th anniversary - in the field of education. Now, this support is being extended to the world of sport via the game of basketball. I have the greatest confidence that thanks to this support, the 'Darüşşafaka Tekfen' team will not only continue to be one of the leaders here in Turkey, but will also be able to represent our country in competition with the best teams in Europe."

Also participating in the ceremony were players Oğuz Savaş, Michael Eric and Doğuş Özdemiroğlu - a young talent from Darüşşafaka High School who was trained up in the basketball team there. "I would like to express my thanks to Tekfen Holding for their support," Özdemiroğlu said. "Throughout the coming season, the team will play in accordance with the traditional Darüşşafaka spirit - one of sharing and mutual co-operation. We will do our very best," he promised.
